The First Real Warm Weekend of the Year in Lincoln

Lincoln wakes up in a specific way when the weather first turns. Here is where locals go, and what makes this one of the best weeks of the year.

From the blog

There is a particular week in Lincoln that locals recognize without anyone naming it. The weather finally breaks into the mid seventies. The oak trees look greener than they did a week ago. Porches fill up. Dogs start getting walked twice a day again. This is that week.

I have lived in a lot of towns, and Lincoln does the first warm weekend better than most. Here is why, and where I tend to point visitors.

McBean Park earns its title

McBean is Lincoln’s front yard. On the first warm Saturday, you will see half the town rotating through it: kids on the playground, families at the pavilion, neighbors walking the loop. Nothing about McBean is fancy, and that is the whole point. You bring a blanket and your own snacks, and you figure the rest out from there.

Downtown patios are suddenly full

Beermann Plaza and the stretch of Lincoln Boulevard downtown come alive the minute people do not need a jacket. If you have been meaning to try something new, this is the week. The patios fill fast between five and seven, so either go early or be patient. A few of the independently owned spots worth knowing about are tagged in our directory, and I am going to be adding to the list through the season.

The vineyards start feeling like spring

Lincoln is surrounded by small family vineyards that most residents have never set foot on. Rancho Roble Vineyards on Fleming Road and Wise Villa Winery up Wise Road are both within ten minutes of downtown. Warm weather plus a bottle of something local plus a view of the rolling hills is one of Lincoln’s best underused moves.

The trails around Twelve Bridges

The paths around the Twelve Bridges area and up into Lincoln Hills are quietly gorgeous right now. Wildflowers, long shadows, almost no one out after six. If you have a dog, they already know.

The small rituals

Ice cream runs. Late walks after dinner. That first round of people watching the sun set from a patio. None of this is unique to Lincoln, but Lincoln happens to be an easy place to do all of it well.

This weekend is the real kickoff. Enjoy it.
